We all want our children to be motivated to practice their instruments on their own, but here’s how parents can help:
- Learning an instrument requires work, but it can also be fun. Always take an active interest in your child’s progress and ask them how their lesson went or what is the favorite thing they did or song they learned. Look at their assignment sheet and remind them it is THEIR responsibility to do everything the teacher asked and bring all their music with them, not yours.
- They should be able to practice daily, at a regular time, free from distraction. This means no T.V., computer games or other distractions, like siblings , should be in the room when they are practicing.
- Have them play for you or your friends and family as often as possible. This will help them get used to performing.
- See that they always come to lessons unless they are ill or an emergency happens. Consistency is extremely important for regular progress.
- Be encouraging and generous with praise.
- Keep in touch with the teacher.
- Consider taking your student to a live concert. There are many free performances in the area.
