Project Description
JOSEPH L
Dr. Joseph Lyons is a performing artist, music educator, composer, arranger, and artistic designer who plays and teaches a wide range of woodwind, brass, string, and electronic instruments. Dr. Lyons has taught in settings ranging from private lessons and ensemble rehearsals to lecture-recitals at major international conferences.
A Georgia native, Dr. Lyons holds a Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Georgia, where he studied both saxophone and cello. He also holds graduate degrees in saxophone performance from Georgia State University (MM), Stephen F. Austin State University (PAC), and the University of South Carolina (DMA). As a saxophonist and composer, Dr. Lyons specializes in experimental interactive electroacoustic music, and one of his goals is to integrate this discipline into more “traditional” musical settings through the creation and performance of new works in the genre.
In addition to his formal studies, Dr. Lyons has enjoyed an extensive career in the pageantry arts as a performer, instructor, and designer. Most notably, he was a lead mellophone player in the Bluecoats Drum & Bugle Corps from 2014-17, and he is now the Winds & Visual Caption Head for the Bluecoats’ SoundSport ensemble Rhythm IN BLUE.
Dr. Lyons believes that music is for everyone, and everyone deserves the opportunity to develop their own unique artistic voice throughout their lifelong musical journey.
