Project Description

SUMMER L

Originally from Bloomington, Illinois, Summer L graduated from Oberlin Conservatory of Music (2012) and the University of Colorado-Boulder (2015), earning both Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees in Violin Performance. Summer also holds an International Diploma from the National Guild of Piano Teachers (a division of the American College of Musicians).

During her undergraduate career at Oberlin, Summer participated in the conservatory’s Student Teaching / Non-Music Major Instruction Program, providing lessons to children and adults in the local community, as well as other Oberlin students. While continuing her post-graduate education at the University of Colorado-Boulder, Summer was employed as a Graduate Teaching Assistant in the String Department and a Violin Section Coach / String Mentor for the Greater Boulder Youth Orchestras.

In addition to having 11+ years of experience teaching violin, piano, and music theory/ear training to students of all ages, Summer has performed in numerous venues worldwide. Some highlights include playing at the White House under the invitation of the Obama administration; completing orchestra tours in China and Singapore; recording with bassist Kip Winger (from the band Alice Cooper) in Cleveland, Ohio; being a part of musical production for the premiere screening of collage film Decasia in New York City; and performing live alongside Natalie Merchant at a Boulder, Colorado event. Summer is also an original founding member of the Colorado-based entertainment group Red Rock Strings, in addition to being involved with many  other ensembles and organizations along the Front Range.

During music lessons, Summer prefers to draw from a number of different pedagogical methods and introduce a variety of musical styles over time, carefully considering the individual interests, initiative, and natural ability of each student. She also likes to gradually incorporate general piano skills, sight-singing, and music theory/ear training into lessons, so ultimately her students can be well-rounded as musicians and have as much knowledge available to them as possible. This highly-personalized approach helps keep students engaged and finding lessons fun, fresh, and exciting.

Aside from being extremely passionate about teaching and performing, Summer loves cooking cuisine experienced from her various travels, learning languages, playing solo RPG’s (The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim is an consistent favorite), watching classic & old school movies, and exploring the natural outdoor beauty of Colorado daily
